GRANDMA LYNN’S SIMPLE HOLIDAY SUGAR COOKIES
Grandma Lynn’s sugar cookies were one of Jeffrey’s fondest memories of her. There is just something about a family holiday recipe that can bring you back in time. The tastes and smells bring an overall sense of joy. These are a simple sugar cookie that will sweeten up your coffee or tea. They are delicious just the way they are but are also great when frosted!
When I make his Grandma Lynn’s sugar cookies, I will make a few batches because Jeffrey prefers a crispier sugar cookie, where I like a softer cookie. So the first batch I make is on the softer and chewier side and then the second batch I will bake for an extra 1-2 minutes to create that perfect crispy sugar cookie that he likes so much!
The Ingredients Needed to Make Grandma Lynn's Sugar Cookies
This is a very simple sugar cookie recipe with all your basic ingredients. In fact, you probably already have most of them in your pantry!
For the shortening, I will use the blocks that Crisco has. One block is all you need. I know it may seem like a lot, but this recipe makes quite a bit of dough. I have never tried using lard or margarine but that is an option as well.
As far as the milk goes, I don’t think it makes a huge difference with what milk you use. I think I’d stick with cows milk, but 1% 2% low-fat or whole, I don’t think it’ll make too much of a difference. I use what I have at the time, which is usually 2% or whole.
Grandma Lynn’s sugar cookies can be made just how they are or they can be frosted! We like them either way. If you make them plain, just how they are, they aren’t overly sweet. If you want a sweeter cookie, I would definitely make a homemade frosting, or store bought works too! I will list the homemade frosting below.
Tips
When I make these sugar cookies, I will bake my batch, which is a softer and chewier cookie for about 10 minutes. For Jeffreys batch, which is a crispier cookie, I will bake for an additional 2-3 minutes. Keep an eye on them!
The dough can appears as more of a crumbly mixture initially so don’t fret! Just keep working and kneading the ingredients together. If you are using larger cutouts or shapes be gentle as they can be fragile. I use a spatula to get underneath the dough cutouts if they are larger.
Sometimes I will have a sugar cookie in the morning with my coffee. I know it’s dessert but there’s nothing wrong with some dessert before breakfast, haha!
If you want to frost your sugar cookies, I would make a homemade frosting. I personally think it tastes way better with a homemade sugar cookie. All it is, is powdered sugar, butter, vanilla and milk.
3 cups powdered sugar
1/3 cup butter, softened
1.5 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp milk
Mix until combined and you’ve got some tasty frosting!
GRANDMA LYNN'S SUGAR COOKIES
Ingredients
- 1 cp granulated sugar
- 1 cp shortening lard or margerine work too
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 eggs
- 5 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 1/2 cps all-purpose flour
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 F.Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside. To make your dough, start with your dry ingredients. In a medium bowl, combine the baking soda, salt and all-purpose flour. Set aside. In another mixing bowl, with a mixer (if you have a KitchenAid mixer, use that here), mix together the wet ingredients- granulated sugar, shortening, vanilla, eggs and milk. Once it's combined, start slowly adding in the dry ingredients. Once you've combined everything, you will have your dough. This dough is on the crumbly side, so don't be alarmed!Take your hands and start kneading the dough to better form it. Once you've done that, place it on a floured surface and begin rolling it out. Roll it out until it's about 1/4 inch thick. Take your cookie cutters and start making your cookies! Place them on a the prepared baking sheets until they are full. These cookies don't expand too much, so you can pack quite a few on the baking sheet.Once you've filled your baking sheet with the cookies, place them in the oven for 10-12 minutes. Or until slightly golden around the edges. While the first batch is baking, continue filling up your second baking sheet with cookies. When the first batch is done, place the second batch in the oven.Let cool for 3-5 minutes and then place on a cooling rack.Serve warm with a nice glass of milk or even some coffee or tea would be delicious!
