SENSATIONAL SESAME CRUSTED GINGER WONTON SOUP
Wontons filled with a chicken mixture pinched and sealed to perfection. Crisped sesame seeds underneath and then steamed. Ladle the homemade broth over top of the wontons and you have a warm meal to enjoy.
This wonton soup is a must make! It’s relatively simple to make loaded with so much wonderful flavor. The wontons themselves are easy to assemble, they just take a little time. The sesame seeds crusted on the bottom add a great crunch and compliment the wonton filling and soup so well!
I like to serve about four wontons per person in a nice bowl of the soup. When you bite into the wonton, the slight crunch from the sesame crusted bottom is just so good!
The Ingredients Needed for the Sesame Crusted Ginger Wonton Soup
You can, most likely, find the wonton wraps at your local grocery store in the refrigerated area. If you know how or have a recipe, you could also make homemade wonton wraps for your wonton soup. Keep them square and thin.
For the filling, I use ground chicken as my protein. If you’re not a fan of ground chicken, you could also use ground turkey, ground pork or tofu. I add in mushrooms, ginger, garlic and spinach. If you don’t like mushrooms, don’t use them. You could omit the spinach and use kale. Personally, I think the garlic and ginger are a must. They bring so much flavor to this dish. Instead of salting anything, I use soy sauce. This adds a great flavor. For the seasonings, they’re simple. I use black pepper and red pepper flakes to your liking. If you prefer more spice, add more than a teaspoon!
For the soup, I keep this on the simpler side. I tie in the garlic and ginger and add in some onion and carrot. I used chicken broth, but you could also use veggie or beef broth.
TIPS
Don’t over fill the wontons. This will make it a lot harder to seal the wontons.
Chop everything up before hand. This makes things go a lot smoother when you begin assembling you wontons for your wonton soup!
To reheat, follow the same instructions as when you make them the first time. Put a little oil in the pan, place your wontons in the pan, pour a little water in there and cover with a lid. Let steam. Warm up the broth in a separate pan. They taste just as good the next day for lunch.

Instructions
- *Before I start, I like to chop up all my ingredients*WONTONSIn a medium bowl, add the ground chicken, 1 green onion (chopped), 1/2 cp mushrooms (finely chopped), 1 clove garlic (minced), 1 (heaping) tbsp of ginger (finely chopped), handful of spinach (chopped), 2 tbsp soy sauce and 1 tsp black pepper. Mix until everything is combined.Set up your "wonton making" station. Grab your wonton wraps, a large plate and a small bowl of water. To assemble, place a tablespoon of your chicken mixture onto your wonton wrap. Brush water onto all four sides of the wonton wrap. Take the top right corner and bottom left corner and bring them together. Take the other two corners and bring them to the center. All four corners should be touching. Lightly pinch to seal and secure the wonton. Repeat until you've made all your wontons.Grab a small plate or a shallow bowl for your sesame seeds. Using the same small bowl of water, quickly dip the bottom of the wonton into the water and then into the sesame seeds. So the bottom of the wonton is covered with sesame seeds. Repeat until all wontons are done.BROTHIn a large pot over medium heat, add in a tablespoon of sesame oil. When the oil is shimmering, add in your carrots, onion, garlic and ginger. Stir occasionally for 8-10 minutes until carrots have softened and things are fragrant. Add in the chicken broth, soy sauce, rice vinegar and red pepper flakes. Stir and bring to a gentle simmer. Once its simmering, put a lid on and reduce the heat to low.Now back to the wontons. In a large pan, heat about 2-3 tbsp of sesame oil over medium heat. Let the oil get hot. Add in as many wontons as you are able to fit and let cook for 3 minutes. Add in 1/4 cp water and immediately put a lid on. *Be careful when adding the water, it will splash! Reduce the heat to medium low and steam for 6 minutes.Remove the wontons from the pan and place on a plate. Place about 4 wontons in a shallow bowl and ladle the broth over top (about 2-3 ladlefuls). You don't want to fully submerge the wontons. Garnish with some green onion and enjoy!
